A Love Story

Magic for a Mezzophilic

Never before I had been to Schwetzingen. I’ve played soccer matches in about every village around Schwetzingen but somehow I never made the 20 km from my home town to that beautiful castle and park. Otto von Bismarck was an honorary citizen of Schwetzingen. And now the great Joyce DiDonato honored the town with a […]

One shot, one hit

“It’s a warm summer evening in ancient Greece…” Thalia and Melpomene sit where they always sit and watch me finally getting my own shot of the theater at night.

Bi – ich auch

Who hasn’t smiled at this slightly modified non-smoking-sign when they first saw it? It seems to be there for ages and of course I couldn’t keep myself from photographing it. So here some small impression of the theater’s rehearsal stage.

Vintage Amadeus

Today I spent a day playing in the library. The result: Three vintage look photos of me as some kind of Amadeus, dressed up for “Alessandro Stradella” at Stadttheater Giessen. This has been a quite strange production with a lot of mental absence, but still they made me look pretty cool.^^

“Everyone knows that opera is about sex.”

The idea for this post came in April, and once again, it is based on a citation of my favorite article: „Ruggiero’s Deceptions, Cherubino’s Distractions” by Margaret Reynolds. In the beginning, Reynolds argues that opera is about sex. She writes “Everyone knows that opera is about sex. It is no accident that the opera house […]

Ode to Joyce

In German, we can use the same word for tall and great – groß. I once sat at a table with a tall priest. There wasn’t a lot of space and when he tried to get up someone said “yeah, it’s a bit uncomfortable for someone who is groß”. He answered: “I am not a […]

White shirts

A break cannot be caught. Yesterday, I had a look at my rss feed reader and in the first article displayed, a question was proposed: What’s the No. 1 opera that allows a White Shirt mezzo to have their hands all over generally not just one, but two sopranos? The Giessen production of Figaro provides […]

Thank you, EMSOC!!

I can imagine at some desks across Europe there are similar scenes today and tomorrow: EMSOC musicians returning home, switching on their computers, and looking for the others on Facebook, hoping to see each other again next year in Croatia. We played our last concert in Giessen yesterday evening, last time Mahler, last time Brahms. […]
